Part of our commitment to the ongoing impact of The Stranger on the Bridge was to adapt it into a theatre production that would reach new audiences with its messages of hope and tackling taboos.
This was a production crewed on and off-stage exclusively by people with lived experience of mental health, driving an authenticity through every element. We also collaborated with Bristol-based Stepping Out, the UK’s leading mental health theatre group, with their members performing on-stage alongside our actors.
It was crucial to us that whilst this production appeared in theatres we also delivered it in non-traditional settings for harder-to-reach audiences. During the tour we took the play into community centres, schools and prisons where each performance was accompanied by an interactive workshop after the show to facilitate discussions about the themes of mental health.
The play has since attracted interest in a West End transfer.
